Fish meal is a product of the fishing industry and is a valuable protein source in the diets of pigs and poultry. Fish meal is rich in lysine, methionine and tryptophan, as well as vitamins and minerals.
Fish meal can vary in nutrient levels and quality depending on the source and the fish used to produce the meal. The protein and amino acid levels can vary. It is advisable to check the protein level and fish type prior to purchasing fish meal.DIRECTIONS FOR USE
• Fish meal can be included in diets for pigs and poultry of all ages. However, many fish meals can impart a strong oily or fishy off-flavour to the flesh of meat and eggs if included in the diet at levels above 7%. The fishy and oily flavour are thought to be caused by the highly polyunsaturated fatty acids present in the meal, and in pork, is associated with the fat depots.
• Some processors may require that fish meal not be included in diets for finisher pigs prior to slaughter. Check with the processor prior to feeding fish meal.
• Higher levels can be included in the diets of young pigs and poultry or animals not going for slaughter.
